Spencer Glacier and the Alaska Railroad

So I had a relatively free weekend and have heard from numerous people that I needed to check out a glacier called Spencer Glacier. I was told that it was one of the prettiest easily accessible glaciers in South Central Alaska and that I would not be disappointed. Being in Seward and having Exit Glacier so close by I thought it couldn’t be as spectacular as everyone said, but once again Alaska showed me what she’s made of.

The only way to get to Spencer Glacier is via the Alaska Railroad and it can be visited by jumping off at one of the few “whistle stops” along the railway heading south towards Seward/Whittier. The whistle stops are just short stops where the train drops you off on the way to another destination and then will pick you up on its way back towards it’s starting point. It only gives you a couple of hours to explore on a day trip, but you do have the option to catch a train in the next day or two if you decide you want to camp out. The Alaskan Railway in itself is a fun trip. The cars are clean, the staff is friendly, and the scenery is indescribably pretty. You never know when you may spot wildlife either!

Anyways, I chose a quick day trip and hiked out to the viewpoint of the glacier. The glacier itself is massive, but I think what was most impressive was the iceberg filled lake adjacent to it. Massive chunks of ice float in the waters and it is so neat to watch kayakers cruising through with ease. Next time I go I certainly want to take a float trip and spend the night, it just looks like such an amazing experience to be paddling next to pieces of ices that literally dwarf you. If you chose to not do an excursion though, you can simply hike to the different viewpoints like I did and it is still well worth the trip. Every group that gets off at the whistle stop is accompanied by a park ranger which, if you choose to stay with the group, will give you a short guided tour of the area (and make sure you get back to the train on time). If you want to strike out on your own just be aware of critters, plenty of animal tracks were throughout the area but my only wildlife for the day was a stoic bald eagle and cute porcupine in a tree! Not too shabby! 🙂

If you’re looking for a fun day trip out of Anchorage, taking the railway to Spencer Glacier should certainly be on your list! The scenic views you get along the way will astonish you, but the glacier itself will leave you speechless. If you’re looking for more than a hike, the railway offers plenty of tours from floating, to river rafting, and glacier hikes right from the train station. There is certainly something for everyone to enjoy!
